Laverta Jean Cook
Laverta Jean Cook
December 24, 1930 ~ June 2, 2017
Laverta Jean Cook was born on December 24, 1930, in Shamrock, Texas, to parents Grover and Essie Sloan. She moved to the basin as a young girl and later married Glade Cook in 1948. They were sealed in the LDS Temple in 1965 and remained married for 67 years.
Laverta worked at Fashion Cleaners for over a decade, and later, at Christensen’s Department Store for nearly two decades. She enjoyed hard work and was particularly passionate about her work in the fabric department at Christensen’s, as many locals may recall. Laverta beautifully crafted clothing and quilts, often displayed in the store, and advised numerous patrons on their sewing projects.
At the age of seven, Laverta began sewing. She quickly learned she loved any work done by hand. Knitting, canning, soap making, gardening, sewing, quilting; anything she could create with her hands brought her joy. More importantly, she was passionate about serving our Heavenly Father by fulfilling multiple callings for the LDS Church. Laverta served as a spiritual leader to many other friends and family as well.
Laverta is survived by her children: Russ (Cathie) Cook, of Houston, Texas; eight grandchildren: Kim Balagat, of Pueblo West Colorado; Justin Cordova, of Redwing, Colorado; Kelly Penn, of Layton, Utah; Greg Cook; Shellie Sauber; Nichole Comer; and Jeff Ebel; all of Houston, Texas; and Shari Rogers, of Vernal, Utah; daughter-in-law: Karen Cook of Vernal, Utah; siblings: Harold Sloan, of Vernal, Utah; and James Sloan of Bailey, Colorado.
Laverta is preceded in death by her husband, Glade Cook; parents: Grover Sloan and Essie (Buckner) Sloan; children: Greg Cook and Paula Cook; siblings: Barney Sloan and George Sloan.
