Louise Stringham Atwood
Louise Stringham Atwood was born July 19, 1925 to Philip Bryant Stringham and Ella Jane Wimmer Stringhan and was delivered at home by her father. She was the eighth of ten children. She completed grade school in Maeser, graduating from high school in Vernal before attending Weber College in Ogden. Some of her fondest childhood memories were spent on her father’s summer range on Diamond Mountain. A nature lover at heart, she enjoyed the outdoors, particularly horses, flowers and gardening. She married Alburn Dee Atwood on November 24th, 1944 in Salt Lake City and the marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. They started their family in Vernal Utah where four of their six children were born; David, Layne, Kathleen and Billie. They were farmers and in 1953, while farming in Wyoming their 5th child Janice was born. 2 years later while homesteading in Rupert, Idaho their 6th child Joanne was born. Over the next decade and a half Louise and Alburn brought hundreds of acres of land into development helping to transform the area into the famous potato region it is today. They moved to Pendleton, Oregon in 1971 where she worked for the Umatilla County Assessor’s Office for 20 years, retiring as a personal property appraiser. She relocated to Kent, Washington in 1995 where she lived for the past 21 years. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints holding various positions, serving in the Relief Society Presidency as a counselor and President. She was in the Young Women’s Presidency where she was beloved by those she served. Her love of music manifested itself as she served as Ward Chorister for 50 years and was known for her particularly beautiful voice. Louise is preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Alburn; her son, David; daughters Kathleen, Janice, and Joanne; as well as all 9 of her siblings. She is survived by two of her daughters; Layne (David) Rasmussen and Billie Atwood. She is also survived by her 4 grandchildren; Justin Michael (Nikki) Hepworth, Erin Hepworth (Jacob) Stewart, Alise Rasmussen (Tom) Christensen, and Nathan Rasmussen and her 9 great-grand children; Paige, Haydn, Lydia, Evelyn, Craig, Amara, Cale, Adelyn, and Myriam. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 11AM at the Kentwood Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Kent, Washington.
