Mildred Lind Mansfield
Mildred Lind Mansfield passed away on January 15, 2016, at the age of 95 in Vernal, Utah. She was born November 7, 1920, in Vernal, Utah, the second daughter of Lucy Goodrich and Lewis Elmer Lind. The family moved from Vernal to Dryfork when she was six years old, and she spent her growing up years there. After high school graduation, she attended LDS Business College in Salt Lake City, where she learned stenography and typing, and was then employed at Fort Douglas. Mildred met Henry Allen Mansfield at the Coconut Grove in Salt Lake City where he was stationed at Fort Douglas with the Air Force Signal Corp. They were married July 27, 1942, in the Logan, Utah, LDS temple. They spent their first married years in Alabama where Henry was stationed. Their first son Leon was born there, and shortly after Henry was sent overseas. Mildred and Leon rode the trains and whatever other transportation was available to return to Dry Fork while Henry was away. When Henry returned, they partnered in Dry Fork for several years in the sheep business with her father Elmer Lind. Many family stories are told of the hardships on the ranch. Mildred had to walk part way down the canyon when their second child Dana was born, Their fourth child, Wynn, was born in the car on the way to the hospital near Remember The Maine Park. After a time, they moved into Maeser where Mildred lived the remainder of her life. Mildred was mother to seven children — five sons and two daughters: Leon (Gloria) Mansfield; Dana (Barry) Colovich; Loren (Vicki) Mansfield; Wynn (Alys) Mansfield; Ramona (Bob) Rogers; and Marc (Susan) Mansfield; and Val John Mansfield. She was the proud grandmother of 31 grandchildren, and 87 great grandchildren, with her first great-great-grandchild on the way. Of these, she was proud to say that 27 had served LDS missions, including her and Henry. Her accomplishments through her life have been many. She was a very hard worker, reared seven children, and enjoyed and grew a large garden every year which helped provide for her family. She also enjoyed flower gardening, canning, genealogy, sewing and quilting, music, poetry and literature, reading and current events. She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and the local poetry club. She was recognized for several of her poetry compositions, having placed several times in state competitions. She was a kind and loving mother and a good sport, always finding time to support the children in whatever they were doing. As an active member of the LDS Church she served in many callings. She lovingly taught in Primary for many, many years in the Maeser Second Ward, and found time to serve others in their time of need. She served a mission with her husband in the San Jose California Mission in 1987. An excellent stenographer, she often recorded in shorthand and transcribed funerals for many in the area in the days before computers. She also spent countless hours recording and typing the patriarchal blessings which her husband gave during his years as Stake Patriarch. Mrs. Mansfield is preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Virginia (Herman) Andreason; Rulon (Flora) Lind; and Ruth (John) Jones; her youngest son Val John Mansfield; and husband Henry Allen Mansfield. She is survived by her remaining six children and their spouses, her grandchildren, and many great grandchildren. She left a wonderful legacy for her family.
